What makes you think it needs to be repaired?
Without other information I would bet on a problem caused by spyware.

CAUTION!!!!! Removing some spyware can damage the Winsock stact. Before
you try to remove spyware using any of these programs , download a copy of
LSP-Fix - a free program to repair damaged Winsock 2 stacks (all Windows
versions) so that the program will be available after removing the spyware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

Sorry about the omission -
Spyware stuff:
AdAware SE Pro
AdWatch SE Pro
AVG Free
MS Malware Removal
Spybot S&D
Spyware Blaster
All are up to date and USED.
Also had ProcessGuard (paid) but that seemed to cause problems so I
uninstalled it until I could learn more about it.

The problem with IE6 is that after a while of using it, it locks up and is
usually very difficult to get shut down. Sometimes even Task Manager can't
kill the hung page. This is always when I have 5 or 6 pages open and have
been working for an hour or more. When I do get shut down, I can restart IE6
and get back up to speed.

I do not stay on 24/7, since I have only a 26.4 Kbps dialup (out in the
boondocks I'm lucky when I can get THAT) and no firewall.

My system is 1.10 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP, 256 MB RAM, 80 GB Maxtor HDD.

Also, Belarc shows that I have Win2K SP5 in addition to SP4 (listed in two
different locations on the printout); I assume SP5 is the Update Rollup that
I recently installed. Some searching that I did turned up KB277624, which
says: "If you need to uninstall Internet Explorer, uninstall the Windows
2000 service pack, uninstall Internet Explorer by using the Add/Remove
Programs tool in Control Panel, and then reapply the Windows 2000 service
pack." That will get me back to IE5. Then I assume I can reinstall IE6 and
it will again appear in the add/remove programs list; allowing me to repair
IE6 as I've done before (long ago).

But my question is, do I uninstall SP4 or SP5 or both? There is some
confusion here because SP4 seems to be the leader of the pack in everything
I read, and no one else even refers to the Rollup as being an SP except for
Belarc.

This has caused a major problem a few months ago when I installed a bunch of
MS updates (after being away for a while) and apparently violated some kind
of installation sequence which was never made clear to me. It took a long
time to get that straightened out.

So I think the problem is not malware, but insufficient instructions from MS
that I need to get cleared up.

And right now my aged brain is reeling a bit so I'd better quit and let you
ponder this while I recuperate.

Thanks for the prompt response, and I hope I'm not making you as confused as
I am.

Before uninstalling anything I would do this:

Go to: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware]

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates: "hijackthis.log")

Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.

Sign in, go to the "Malware Removal" section.
Press "New Topic" and post a description of your symptoms. If they need to
see your log they will ask for it.
