IE6 Links Bar cannot preserve order - NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO FIX THIS???

I've spent a lot of time looking on Google Groups for some answer to this
question. I've seen countless people ask it with NO REPLY.

Someone, some MVP has got to know why Internet Explorer keeps sorting the
links bar alphabetically. I've seen posts going back to IE4 with this
problem. Something is not getting fixed from version to version.

No matter where you drag the icons, they go in alphabetical order. If you
get them in the order you want, and open a new window, they go back to
alphabetical order. Close and re-open? Alphabetical order. This is insane.
How can this question be asked SO MANY times over so many versions of this
program, and yet no one has ever figured out how to fix this.

Please. Someone give us a hand here. Re-installing does nothing. I've got a
clean install right now, and it took a week before it decided to start doing
this.

Make the IE window in which you've re-ordered, er..., links in Links to your
preference the /last/ IE window closed at the end of your session.

It doesn't matter. When you re-open it, it's back to the alphabetical order.
Even if you leave the last IE window correct and restart, it's still
alphabetical.

Hi,
I don't know why it happens, but IE6 likes to have Favorites in alphabetical
order. It may let you keep a custom order for a while, but, eventually,
it'll probably alphabetize them.

When you rearrange them, are you doing it from the Links button- not from
Favorites> Organize Favorites?

You know about the naming tricks, right? Put a number or space in front of
the name or choose a name with the first letter of your choice.

If you're willing to wade through 194 or so entries, the Favorites will not
realphabetize themselves if there are 194 or more entries in a particular
Favorites folder. I've had this happen.

Hope this helps,
Don

OK, I have an update for that method:

It kept the settings for a day.

So instead of losing them as soon as I closed the window or opened a new
one, it worked for a day.

Microsoft needs to check this out. I've seen people complain about this in
IE4 forums!

Before SP2, I only had this problem about twice a year. Now it's consistent.
I, too, question why Microsoft has no solution to this. It's really getting
frustrating. I shouldn't have to put a number, symbol, or character before a
site's name just to keep the buttons in order, nor should I have to rack up
hundreds of links just to override the error.

I completely agree with you about putting symbols before the names. There's
precious little space to be wasted with extra characters.

There isn't an problem with Firefox...but there are a lot of things I like
to use, like Yahoo NFL gamecast which only support IE6.

Microsoft, if you're reading this, fix it.

Has anyone discussed why it doesn't always happen? Some setting,
perhaps? I don't have the problem unless I import new urls from the file
menu. You don't by chance use one of those favorite synchronizers? Sorry
if this is covered ground, new to the thread.
