IE6 keeps crashing (with W2000 Pro)

John

I have just upgraded to W2000 Professional with SP2 (from W98). The W2000
upgrade overwrote my IE6 (and OE6) and left me with IE5 and OE5 so I had to
download IE/OE6 again. The W2000 seems fairly stable but IE6 only lasts a
matter of seconds before I get the "Microsoft Internet Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience" message. I am reluctant to reinstall because of the amount
of work involved in getting back to v6 and manually plugging in my old
emails which the W2000 upgrade had caused. Is there any way of figuring out
what is causing IE6 to keep crashing every few seconds?

Hardware is Compaq Deskpro EN P3 1GHz 256 Mb ram 20 Gb HD. Device manager
is not showing any problem devices.

Thanks

I bet you'll get the standard response....its probably a virus or malware.
MS never likes to admit that there may be a prob.with their OS.

This could be one of several things - with a generic error message like
that. See this site for several troubleshooting articles:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_10.htm#close

If no joy, we will need more information - see this site on how to get the
info we need from the IE Error Reporting Tool:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#ert

BTW, you are very behind, security-wise, in your version of Win2K as SP-2
came out in Aug. 2003.

Hi John :)

First, have you tried to do a reinstall of the IE6? After the upgrade, and
the return of the IE default to the IE5.5, you *may* need to reinstall the
IE6 as some files may have been altered or replaced.

You can download the IE6 here and install from the hard drive, which I
recommend, as I have personally found it sometimes less eventful than
installing from the website:

Full IE6 77 MB package in one zipped file to install

http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/microsoft/ie/

and here

http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/microsoft/ie/6.0/

You can also try the following to see it it will help:

Open an ms-dos prompt window (Start>Run>) and type the following (one entry
at a time), and press enter after each line. A message will appear stating
that these have been registered successfully.

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll (this command only for Win2000 and XP)
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

Hope this helps

Jan :)

I have reinstalled IE6 + SP1 and registered the dll's you mentioned below.
Some web pages don't cause IE6 to crash but others, for example ebay only
last a few seconds before IE6 crashes so the re-install has not made any
difference unfortunately. Any clue as to what the problem might be ?

Another strange thing, I am on dial-up internet access. When I get the dial
up connection box, it shows an incorrect length password. When I correct
the password and click save password, it connects to the internet ok but it
hasn't saved the updated password. I have tried changing the password in my
computer, control panel, network dial up connections and also in IE6, tools,
internet options, connections. Although I can change the password it
is not saved and the incorrect password remains. Could this be connected to
the above problem ?

Many thanks

Thanks for the info. Here is the error signature:

AppName Iexplore.exe
AppVer 6.0.2800.1106
ModName APITRAP.DLL
ModVer 1.0.0.1
Offset 00003496 and sometimes 000034F4

Does this help id the problem?

By the way, I have disabled third party browser extensions and still get the
problem.

Thanks for your help

Hi John :)

Try the information here and see if it will help:

Save password doesn't work
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers2.htm#save_password

also...

It is possible that you have some type of hyjacker, malware or spyware on
your system causing the problem. follow the instructions here to fully clean
your system:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:

Hope this helps

I have re installed IE6 + sp1. Run the DLL registrations below. Have
applied all security patches and applied W2k SP4. Have run Microsoft
Malicious Software Removal Tool ... it was clean, and still VERY often get
IE6 crash with error signature:

AppName Iexplorer.exe
AppVer 6.0.2800.1106
ModName APITRAP.DLL
ModVer 1.0.0.1
Offset 00003473 (offset values differ sometimes)

In desperation, I tried registering regsvr32 apitrap.dll and got the
following error message:

"apitrap.dll was loaded but the dll register server entry point was not
found. dll register server may not be exported or a corrupt version of
apitrap.dll may be in memory. Consider using Pview to detect and remove it"

Should I have tried registering apitrap.dll ? and what action should I
take in view of the above message ? What is Pview ?

Many thanks for the help.

Hi John :)

Do you have Norton Cleansweep? It appears that this .dll is a file in
Norton's Cleansweep, and you might also check the information here:
http://community.installshield.com/archive/index.php?t-2803.html
also..
http://community.installshield.com/archive/index.php?t-159.html

and...

Source: Scroll down to O20 - AppInit_DLLs Registry value autorun
http://www.aumha.org/a/hjttutor.php#o20

This Registry value located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Windows loads a DLL into memory when the user logs in,
after which it stays in memory until logoff. Very few legitimate programs
use it (Norton CleanSweep uses APITRAP.DLL), most often it is used by
trojans or agressive browser hijackers.

In case of a 'hidden' DLL loading from this Registry value (only visible
when using 'Edit Binary Data' option in Regedit) the dll name may be
prefixed with a pipe '|' to make it visible in the log.

You should also go to one of the following and let it do a full on-line scan
of our system:

Trendmicro
http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
or
Panda Active Scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

Hope this helps.

I ran the Housecall scan for the first time several days ago and it worked
fine. I just tried to run it again from the web site and got an error
message "HouseCall is only supported English Internet Explorer or
Traditional Chinese Internet Explorer" I selected my location correctly.
Does anyone know if the HouseCall site is having problems ? The error
message doesn't seem to be very well worded considering it is a English
language site.

Thanks

Further to my previous, after trying a number of times to get a scan,
HouseCall wants to <<"automatically install a proper JavaVM">> on my
machine. When I ran HouseCall for the first time last week it ran fine and
made no mention of wanting to install Java. I am reluctant to allow the
install, what should I do ?

Thanks
