IE6 hangs when loading page

I recently installed the WinXP service pack 2 and all IE security updates.
Several days later a virus was detected and cleaned (McAfee). I didn't make
note of the virus name because it was successfully cleaned. Shortly after
that I noticed that I could no longer load a particular web site that I use
quite a bit for chat (java-based chat). When I attempt to go to the site it
seems as though it will load, I can see the page border and some frames, but
then IE just hangs and won't go any further.

I downloaded FireFox and I can use this browser to access the site with no
problem. I can also access the site from my laptop and work PC with no
problem. I've cleaned out my cookies, temp files, checked security settings,
checked pop-up blocker, added the site to any lists to always allow pop-ups
and cookies (in case that was what was causing the trouble) and even checked
my hosts file. No luck.

I ran Ad-aware and for some reason it keeps identifying the fact that I have
my default home page set to blank (about:blank) as a data miner and wants to
clean it from my registry files. If I clean it, IE will open with
www.msn.com as the homepage. I can reset to (about:blank) but then that will
set Ad-aware off again. I don't know if the issue is related to the
non-loading web page or not.

Can anyone think of a reason why the page won't load?

Hi solaceinblue :)

You might try disabling the McAfee ActiveX controls Applet filters in the
Internet Filter window when you select Customize your VShield settings.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

I had the exact same problem except on XP SP1.. The home page change to
msn.com from about:blank is done by AdAware. They had the idea that
about:blank could be heisted by a Malware. Latest version of 1.05 stopped
this. Detailed at Lavasoft support page. Also had problem with not being
able to go to www.msnbc.com. Got page not available. Tried the advice given
by Microsoft at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281679/EN-US/
and it seems to have cured my trouble.

Hi Jan. I'm not sure what options you are referring to. I did an online
chat with a McAfee support rep because I discovered that 90% of the time if I
completely disable McAfee then the page will load, but not always. Disabling
the ScriptStopper in McAfee options didn't have any affect. Are there other
options I should be looking at?
