IE6 fonts gone wacko on some web sites or ...

W

Wes Stebbins

I am working on upgrading a friends computer. He has PhotoShop, InDesign,
etc. I took his computer home to upgrade it, and only took the "box" (no
monitor or other peripherals) to my shop. I noticed while going to
Microsoft's Windows Update web site to get latest XP Pro upgrades) that the
text was practically unreadable, yet other web sites appear to display just
fine.

Could it be that - when my friend installed his Adobe software - he has a
printing company that is virtually all Adobe products - perhaps he
installed some default fonts for his software that inadvertently
removed/altered the default IE 6 fonts, etc.?

What can I do to check this? According to my defaults, etc., on all of MY
other computers that work - I have:

in "IE6\Tools\Internet Options\General\Fonts"

Language script: Latin based

Web page font: Times New Roman

Plain text font: Courier New

Also,

in "IE6\Tools\Internet Options\Accessibility" everything is unchecked;

Also, in "IE6\Tools\Internet Options\Security\Custom Level." I have "Font
Download - Enable" checked.

I need to check those fonts, etc. on my friends computer, but what if
they're the same? Are could it be something else? (even the motherboard?)
I've tried it on different monitors, different video cards, etc., and it
STILL has the same problem - virtyall undiscpherable text on some sites - in
particular the Microsoft site.

If you have customized your fonts in any program that
browses the internet, you are given the option of
specifying whether the browser should use the customized
fonts or those specified in the page being viewed.

Check under the "Accessibility" section of "Internet
Options." for Internet Explorer. You may also want to
try other browsers to see if they have been affected as
well.

Also, you may want to check: drivers of the video card
installed on his computer; the resolution settings
associated with display as configured under "Display
Properties: Settings" tab to determine if they have been
set improperly for the monitor; was any other program
affected in the same manner; was "Tweak Desktop" used to
customize the size of the fonts; was the desktop
customized under "Display Properties: Appearance,
Advanced."

These are just some of the things you may want to check
out.

I apologize for mentioning the Accessibility section: it
would appear that you reviewed these settings.

I experienced this problem previously and it was due to
the driver for my video card not being functional.
Sometimes video driver updates cause more problems than
they solve. There may also be a compatibility issue with
your monitor attached to his video card.

I thought of this after my earlier post.
