IE6 crashing with kernell32.dll error - can anyone help please?

Hi

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me....

I have got Windows XP and run IE6.

My IE6 keeps crashing on me saying it has to shut down, and sorry for the
inconvenience etc..

This is what shows when I look to see what has caused the error:

Error Signature
AppName: iexplore.exe
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2945
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
Offset: 00012a5b
ModName:kernel32.dll

I had also sent an error report to microsoft (what good that does I just
don't know!) and it says that the following files will be included in this
error report:

C:\DOCUME~1\New\LOCALS\~1\Temp\48e0_appcompat.txt

A quick bit of history, as I've had this problem before.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, IE kept crashing. I tried to find a solution - but
couldn't so in the end created a new user on XP and just transfered all my
stuff over. I didn't delete the old user, as I still had some emails I need
to bring over but hadn't got around to doing yet.

Anyway, yesterday, IE working no problem. I had a bit of a computer clean up
- got rid of .tmp files, cleared history, files, cookies in IE, ran adaware.
I also deleted the other user as I had transfered the files I needed.

Go to use IE this morning and the thing crashes! I did a restore, figuring
the last thing I did was delete the user and some files, but this didn't work.

I'm at a loss as to what to do!!

It's not as simple as me just using another browser, as I tend to use a
couple of different ones anyway, and last time this happened I put in IE7 to
see if that would sort it, and it didn't.

Sorry for the long first post, but I wanted to give as much detail as
possible!

Thanks to anyone who is able to help me - it will be very much appreciated!

Hi,
The kernel32 error is probably being caused by another program (possibly
legitimate- possibly malware) toolbar or other browser add-on.

You may have an incompatible browser add-on.
See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp
for troubleshooting information.

ToolbarCop from http://windowsxp.mvps.org/toolbarcop.htm may find an add-on,
BHO or context menu item you've overlooked.

Disable (for diagnostic purposes) programs such as pop-up blockers,
security, toolbars and other add-ons for IE, anti-virus, etc. Take a look at
any program that might be interfering with IE. You may have to reconfigure,
reinstall, or not reinstall, a program.
*Important* Turn on the Windows Firewall (from Control Panel or Security
Center) before disabling a third-party firewall or security suite.

Or this may be a malware problem- adware, spyware, hijacker, trojan, etc.

I seem to have this problem as well. I am not an expert but this error pops
up when I run the game Maple Story. This game is not compatible for Windows
Vista yet but I have been able to run the game until late March '07. Is IE a
link to Maple Story for it to game to function or is it something else?

Hi

Thanks for all the links - the very first one seems to be for IE7 - I have
got 6, so don't think that's going to be valid for me?

I have run adaware, and a registry clean up etc.

The weird thing is, is that on other users, IE6 works fine, could it be
something to do with that temp file?

Downloaded the toolbar cop but don't know what I should and shouldn't be
looking for!

Run Toolbar Cop and let it remove any toolbars you don't really need.

If that doesn't fix it, follow the rest of the steps at

Hi,
Regarding "manage add-ons." this [AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180] indicates IE6 XP
SP2. You should have Tools> Manage add-ons.

Toolbar Cop will sometimes find and list add-ons that are not obvious or had
been forgotten. If you aren't sure about an item, look it up on google or
another search engine. Remember, you can easily reinstall something like the
Yahoo or Google toolbar.
