IE6 calls 127.0.0.1 "cannot find website"

T

the sniffer,..

Hi, someone worked on my mom's computer and now when you click on any
site from the IE6 Favorites it calls local host and posts, "cannot
find website" or some such 404 type message. The only site that
connects is her health insurance company site. If you type in a
www.whatever.com address it does the same thing too.
Afterwards the hour glass mouse icon is displayed in the upper part of
IE6. It reverts to the arrow in the window where you would normally
see web content.
This is a low end Dell machine with xp pro, SP2 pre installed. The
windows firewall is turned off and it's running AVG virus protection
as it's only loaded program. I tried restoring to default under the
IE6 Tools/Options/Security tab.
I updated AVG and Ad-aware, checked for viruses but no problems.
I tried it without the virus software and it made no difference.
There's nothing obviously weird running in Task Manager.
The machine shipped with 128M memory and was so slow I added another
256M, enabled Classic View, and "adjust for best performance" but
that's all I really changed. We're using 800x600 screen resolution
because it's easier for her to read.
That's all I know, please send help.

She may have a user shell corrupted or the favorites folder is corrupted go
through these steps One-By-One and see if it will solve your issue:
1= IE>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced:
scroll to and uncheck this box:
[ ] Enable Personalized Favorites Menu.

Click [OK] and reboot your machine and try to access the favorites.

2 = Kellys Favorites problems site - XP
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_favorites.htm

3= Courtesy of Alan Edwards - MS MVP :
Open a Run Command and type in:
regedit.exe click [OK]
On the Registry Editor locate this Key ( be warned editing the registry in
the wrong way can render your system useless so backup the registry first)
[-] HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders=
Set the Favorites path to %USERPROFILE%\Favorites
The above should be a REG_EXPAND_SZ value, not REG_SZ
The option is "Enable Personalized Favorites Menu"

4= or Try to Copy the favorites folder from here then delete it and Reboot
and Create another one in the same path and then Import the favorites from
the back up.
the favorites path: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Favorites
Please perform one step (1,2,3,4) at a time and see if it will help resolve
your issue.
HTH.
Let us know.

I've seen this happen when someone loads a "accelerator" from an ISP
tkae a look here and check the settings.

Go to Tools, Internet Options, Connection, LAN settings, and uncheck box
reading "Use a proxy server for your LAN"
