Internet Explorer has crashed and I sent the dump to Microsoft. They said
the problem was caused by a browser extension, and that I should look
through my browser extensions for any that looked suspicious. I did that
and disabled one, but the problem occurred again anyway.

I'm wondering if anybody has any ideas about what this is or what I can do
about it. More detailed info follows.

Thanks,
GM

I found an extension with one of those registry-type names, specifically
{CD67F990-D8E9-11D2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE}
and disabled it. But IE crashed the next day anyway, same problem. I
checked the display of browser extensions again, and it was still marked as
disabled. I rebooted into safe mode and checked the list of extensions
again, but there was nothing on the list in safe mode that hadn't been there
in normal mode. I rebooted, started up IE and looked at the list before
doing anything else. The suspicious extension is apparently loaded at IE
initialization, even if it is disabled (the same thing happens with
Messenger, which I disabled years ago).

I searched through the registry and found it in HKEY_CURRENT_USER -
Software - Microsoft - Internet Explorer - Extensions - CmdMapping; also in
Windows - CurrentVersion - Ext - Settings, where it had attributes
(default), flags and version. There was similar information in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_USERS. I also did a My Computer search in
Windows Explorer, but didn't find anything.

If there's other stuff I might look at, let me know.

The clsid you quoted
{CD67F990-D8E9-11D2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE}

is listed in CastleCops database as belonging to RealPlayer

ref: http://castlecops.com/o9list-1.html

You can try uninstalling RealPlayer if you aren't using it (there may be
conflicts with MS Media Player). If the uninstall does not remove the button
from your toolbar you can delete it from the registry from the

HKEY_CURRENT_USER -
Software - Microsoft - Internet Explorer - Extensions - CmdMapping

Check you listing of bowser extensions for other components of the Real
Player. Any Browser Helper Objects?

The extensions are just for creating the buttons on the Buttons Toolbar in
IE. The Browser Helper Objects are COM objects that are loaded and started
with internet explorer and interact with IE. It is the Browser Helper Object
that may be causing IE to crash.
