IE6 back to previous page

When I hit back button in IE6, IE take me back to the top of the previous
page not the place where I was before in the page (ie like in the middle, or
near bottom where I scrolled down to before I left) I used to have previous
versions of Explorer to take me back to where I was on the previous page when
I hit back button.

Try setting Work Offline (Alt-F,W) before going back.

Provide a pair of links which demonstrate the problem if you need more help.

Work Offline wont be practical as I am surfing on the Net when it happened.
Also there are no links that can be provided as it wont show where the page
will load at alonf the page (top, bottom or middle of the page). Let say I am
at the middle of a page, I click a link on that page, and once on the clicked
page, I press the go back, I will return to my previous page but at the top
of the page, not in the middle where I was last. I remember previous versions

Create a toolbar button if you prefer.

Did you try it? (The intention is to avoid the site refreshing the page.)


Another alternative which I use especially with search results is always
make sure that the link launches in a new window. Some search engines
even provide an option now to do this; otherwise the simplest technique
is to press Shift- when clicking on a link. Then your previous state in the
launching page is perfectly preserved and to "go back" all you have to do
is close (or minimize) the top window.

My search engine, Alta Vista, has the option to open in a new window but even
if I have ticked "Open in a new window" in toolbar options, it will launch
the link in the same IE window that is already opened. I dont know why IE
does this.

OTOH both MSN and Google (e.g.) do have specific options
which support opening results in a new window.

However, both example sites require a Cookie be kept to preserve settings.
If AltaVista does provide this feature make sure you are not blocking
Cookies from it.

What toolbar? Sounds like a problem with a toolbar extension
rather than a problem with IE.

Once Alta Vista toolbar is installed in IE, you will find in "Toolbar
Options" (in the menu of the toolbar), "Search Target", a place to tick "Open
in new window"

As I said, I suspect you have a problem not with IE but with your toolbar.

BTW unless there was a recent update I'm unaware of the AltaVista toolbar
(aka Discovery toolbar) was originally designed for IE4 and never was
modified to work properly with IE5; so it's probably even less compatible
with IE6. It was unfortunately software ahead of its time.
