IE6.0 hangs when opening My Computer as Administrator

R

Robert S

I posted a message earlier about this and got one reply to this, but the
remedy didn't work. I tried the fix suggested in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;819017, but the
problem still occurs.

Briefly, when I double click on "My Computer" the window opens, the message
"Searching for items" appears in the Status bar and the torch appears in the
window - then nothing more happens. When I shut
the window down after a while I get a "not responding" dialog. This problem
only happens when I am logged in as an Administrator user, not as an
unpriviledged user or in Safe Mode. I am running Windows XP SP 1 and IE 6.0
(on help->about its
6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828-1920).

Can anybody help?

Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
Uninstall 821557 hotfix and try again.

I don't have that hotfix. I've only got KB823980, SP1 and WinPcap 2.3 (if
that's a hotfix?!). I've usually had to reinstall windows when I mess
around with hotfixes!

Robert.

Aaaaargh!!

All of these fixes seem to work first time, then don't work after that.

It worked first pop, then it doesn't work any more.

Any more ideas?

Robert.

Hi Kelly,

Robert says the fix works for one time. May it be the nosave settings issue?

Hi Robert,

Re-download either one of them and try it again. I have modified the edit.
Good luck!

Kelly,

Unfortunately, no joy. I have downloaded and run the following:

wia.reg:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\stisvc]
"Start"=dword:00000004

disablerefresh.reg:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanc
ed]
"NoNetCrawling"=dword:00000001

It looks as if neither of these have been altered since yesterday. Have I
got the right files?

Yours in great expectation,
Robert.
