When I go online my IE works fine for a few minutes then it just stops
working and wont let me surf the web. Its not my connection as if i can get a
downoad started it works fine even though the web pages stop working.

I have been trying lots of things (hopefully not causing more damage)

I have tried loading all the IE updates but still no joy

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

First eliminate any spyware.
What You Should Know About Spyware

CAUTION!!!!! Removing some spyware can damage the Winsock stact. Before
you try to remove spyware using any of these programs , download a copy of
LSP-Fix - a free program to repair damaged Winsock 2 stacks (all Windows
versions) so that the program will be available after removing the spyware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

Same thing has been happening to me. I was on the phone with a second-level
MS technician for an hour and a half and she couldn't fix it. Any ideas out
there?

Guys, there seems to be something out there nobody has yet come up with a
certain cure for. Keep trying those anti spyware tools and look at the
LSP-fix utility. If you try that and it works please post back.

Important - LSP-Fix
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Be aware that using either of these to actually remove spyware can result in
some programs refusing to work, in other words "Free" programs that you
downloaded on condition you accepted ads and so called "Research" may get
broken and you might want to uninstall them first. Some spyware actually
breaks Windows trying to force it's way in and you should arm yourself with
LSP-Fix before starting in case you lose internet connectivity.

Charlie, I tried the fix but it didn't work. I've also used three different
spyware programs. It's driving me crazy!

Well someone earlier referred to this page

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823386

Which if not that specific problem sounds much like it, although this
article says IE6 SP1 it also applies to the new IE with W2003 - hmm.

See it mentions HTTP stops responding but not the network as a whole.

Now it does say it's in SP2 and maybe it is, but that does not really prove
there isn't something else at work and maybe Urlmon on this system is
showing up all over the place in XP and the W2003 setups and SP files
needless to say none of the version numbers match any of those listed so
it's kinda hard to make a judgment.

I am just going to boot into XP and see if I get offered any updates :)

I had read that info, too, but I've had SP2 all along and this has only
started happening over the last 4 or 5 weeks. I'm going to try SP3 and see
what happens (although I hear it's more for Windows than for IE). Good luck!

The reason it might be a clue though is that "IF" some new unknown spyware
is filtering your page requests it may somehow have upset the flow to IE...
so the problem could be somewhat related or at least similar.

That's why I went ahead and tried the hotfix but it didn't work. The MS
techie said that it was for servers only and not clients so it wouldn't (and
didn't) work on my PC. What next?
