I am running windows xp. Internet explorer has simply
quit working. I get an error message saying that Internet
Explorer has encountered problems and must shut down. I
feel certain it is related to spys reseting something in
my register. Any suggestions?

From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to open.

Run CWShredder from http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html It's been
the most helpful with this problem. CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it
could be downloaded from another machine onto a floppy disk.

CWShredder is not a broad-spectrum removal tool. You may need to download
*update* and run Ad-aware and/or Spybot S&D.
See: Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:

Also note security tips at that site.

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.
