IE Windows Update Page Freezes

I have an odd problem: I cannot seem to access the windows update page from
my computer. I can access every other page on the internet without a problem,
but when I try to connect to the windows update page, it just freezes. The
problem arose a week ago when it was downloading an update automatically.
When I went to shut it off it said it was finishing downloading the update
and would turn off automatically. I went to bed but it was still doing the
same thing in the morning and again later that day. Also, the computer won't
automatically shut off anymore - it just hangs with the "Windows is Shutting
Down" screen up.

Any ideas?

It might be a little late now but you could try it and see... Check to see
if you have a restore point back to the day before this started. If you do
then restore to that point.

The restore point is way in the past and I've had done quite a bit of stuff
to my computer since than. I wish I would've done that a week ago. I am
running Windows XP Professional SP2.

Open Windows Update.log (located in C:\Windows) and scroll down to recent
dates. Note any Errors listed (e.g., Error 0x80070002) and post them in
your next reply here.

Jeff - that is not a common error (after a lot of research, and I'm no WU
expert. There is a MS Support newsgroup where the real WU experts hang that
may be able to help you better than an IE newsgroup can:

What happens if You go to Control Panel and click Automatic Updates. My XP freezes even then. And I had the same with SP1 already.

Or have You already found the cure?
