IE verison no

I first noticed problem when certain internet-explorer-
dependant programs failed to run claiming problems wth
the verison number not being high enough.
I started IE, went to Help->About Internet Explorer,
and the version is blank.
I run 6 on XPSP1 and have had no previous problems.
I've tried re-installing though this will not complete
as "a higher version is already running"
any help please? thanks

Paul,

Try this:

Click Start, Run and type "c:\windows\inf"
Locate the file called "ie.inf" (might just read as "ie" ).
Right click it and select "Install"

If that fails, follow the steps in KB318378
