ie tries to download a .smi file when I request .xml or .xsl file

Whenever I request a file with a .xml or .xsl extention
using IE 6, I get a download dialog asking if I want to
download the .smi version of the file. For example, if I
request 'sdf.xml', it asks if I want to
download 'sdf.smi'. What's going on? Why doesnt IE just
display the xml like it used to?

Every xml file yields this behavior, regardless of the
source. Even requesting local .xml files yields a download
box for a .smi file. It does the same thing with .xsl

I've tried reinstalling IE6. I also ran a virus check and
Ad-aware.

Need more detail. Is there a public link you can disclose?

Sounds like something is broken somehow, malicious or not.
Can you tell where the download is being directed?

I finally found the solution. I had to update the registry
entry for the text/xml mime type. It was associated to
the .smi extension. I think this was caused by a
RealPlayer installation. I uninstalled it, but apparently
it didnt uninstall cleanly.

Thanks for responding,
Hans
