IE suddenly spawning new window while viewing local drive jpgs

I installed XP SP2 a few days ago, I just started noticing a problem last
night while trying to work my way through 1100 pictures from vacation. I
double click a jpg file from Windows Explorer and IE pops up soing the image
just like always. But if I go the the address bar and change the file name
and hit enter, rather than using the same window, like it used to, it spawns
another instance of IE to dsiplay the JPG. Last night I was using the
Filmstrip view in windows explorer and did launch into Office Picture
Manager to crop a few of the jpgs.

Is there some option or registry entry that controls this new window
launching problem?

Note if I type a new web address in and press enter the same window is used.
If I am browsing a local .htm file and change the address to a new localfile
the same window is used.

FWIW I have noticed similar behaviour when dragging image files
and links to IE windows.

Have you tried using XP's Windows Picture and Fax Viewer instead?
It is the default association for most image files. I'm not sure why there
is no file dialog with it but it does accept new files through dragging
and then you can using its toolbar to page through the list of images.

Robert,

I use the pic/fax viewer for some things, but there are times when it's just
easier from the raw IE window.
