IE starts multiple instances; cannot exit Windows

Even though my taskbar shows that there are no instances
of IE running, Task Manager shows multiple, and when I try
to exit Windows, I'm prompted to abort each of those
instances.

How can I make sure that IE is no longer resident in
memory when I close an IE window?

Gail,

This problem is usually caused by spyware browser helper objects.
