IE shuts down after apply patch KB972260 / MS09-034

Greetings,

I have tested deploy patch for KB972260 / MS09-034, to 11 Windows XP SP2 PCs.
2 of them have problems, where the IE suddenly shuts down when surfing
websites.

Anyone encountered this kind of issue?

Why hasn't Win XP SP3 been installed yet?

What IE version is installed on the two computers? Assuming IE7 or IE8...

1. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE in No Add-ons mode:

=> Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without
Add-ons; or

=> Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No add-ons).

in the background when IE7 and/or IE8 was installed?

4b. Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when it was
purchased)?

4a. We are running Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) v11.0.3001.2224.
All virus definitions are up-to-date.
No other spyware or third-party firewall, except Defender & SEP
As far as I know , no other application was running during install of patch
( maybe Microsoft Office) , as it was installed via WSUS 3.0 SP1.

4b. No other trial software was installed / ever installed.

IE6 does not include a 'Start in No Add-ons mode' option, no, but you can
selectively disable Add-ons via IE Tools | Manage add-ons.

Or you can do a reset:

HOW TO Reset Internet Explorer (IE6)

Note: The following will delete all cookies. To save them beforehand: IE
File | Import and Export | Export Cookies | save the file in an appropriate
location. To import the backup afterwards: IE File | Import and Export |
Import Cookies | point the wizard to the saved file.

1. After closing all IE windows, click Start, Run, type: “inetcpl.cplâ€
(without quotation marks) and press Enter.
2. Select the General tab, and in the Temporary Internet files window, click
"Delete Cookies", and click OK.
3. In the same tab click Delete Files, check the "Delete all offline
contents" box and click OK.
4. Click the Programs tab, and click "Reset Web Settings".
5. Click the Advanced tab, and click "Restore Defaults".
6. Under the Advanced tab, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions

No Add-ons mode? The closest you have in that regard is to uncheck

Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)
(in Options, Advanced tab, Browsing section)

I have done a reset on the IE 6.0 , for the affected PCs.

Seems to have worked after reset. After reset , the IE does not suddenly
shut down anymore.

I have enabled the add-ons , and the IE is still working OK now.

I wonder what was the cause of the errors in the first place....?

I wonder what was the cause of the errors in the first place....?

Without having access to the computers, I dunno. Could have been hijackware
(which may still be present on the computers in question). Could have been
Symantec Endpoint's real-time system protections running in the background
when KB972260 was installed.

Are the computers in question fully patched at Windows Update now?

Has WinXP SP3 been installed yet? If it isn't installed by 12 April 2010,
the computers will not be offered any further critical security updates nor
will Windows Update website be available.
