IE Response to .htaccess protected sites

Hi,

Can anyone advise whether or not IE supports access to .htaccess protected
URLs using the

http://username:[email protected]/directory/

format?

This works with Firefox and Netscape browsers but when I try it with IE6 it
issues an invalid syntax error.
