IE refuses to cache some passwords

This question is basically about how can I force IE to cache passwords when
it is reluctant to do so.

I am running IE 5, SP1, on Windows XP, with all the latest patches updated.
I have AutoComplete set for users & passwords on forms, and I have the
"Prompt me to save passwords" option enabled. Normally this option works
fine for me.

But I have two specific situations where it doesn't:

1. There is a web page on which I have three prior cached username/password
pairs, but IE refuses to add a fourth. I enter the name & password and IE
doesn't ask me whether or not to save it. How can I force it to do so?

2. I have one or more web pages on which IE has previously asked me whether
to save a password, and I said no, thinking it would ask again next
time--but it never asks again for that web page. How can I get it to start
asking again?

I can't figure out where IE saves this information, or else I suppose I
might be able to edit it directly. TIA for any info.

Warren,
This will solve problem #2. It may help with problem #1 (I'm not sure)

Download and run Protected Storage PassView from
http://www.webattack.com/get/pspv.shtml to recover other cached passwords
*before* you clear all passwords.

From Internet Options> Content> Autocomplete, clear all passwords.

Warren, here are a couple of things that you might've
covered already, but I don't see them mentioned:

1. You're in the wrong newsgroup. This is an IE 6
newsgroup. You didn't say you tried the IE 5 ones first,
so if you didn't, you can select them at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/newsgroups/defa
ult.asp

2. While you're on the Autocomplete panel, notice the
checkbox for "Prompt to save password." If it's not
checked, that would explain why you don't get the
prompts. Perhaps at some time in the past you got a
prompt and clicked "don't prompt me again".

Cheers,
Ken

I have seen no answers to the below questions, and so am resubmitting them.
I have an update to question 1. On the web page in question, I can add
additional (invalid) usernames and passwords, and it does ask me whether to
save them. When I say yes, it does save them, and when I return to the
page, it lets me choose among the three valid names and the two invalid ones
I just added as a test. But when I enter the specific (valid)
username/password combination I want it to save, it still won't ask me about
saving it.
