I have a subscription for online data to a genealogy
website. When I brouse specific items on my subscription,
IE crashes. I have accessed my subscription on another
computer and have no problem. So it only exists on my
computer. I have run Spybot, Ad-aware, Norton Anti-virus,
etc. I also use Zone Alarm. I have no other problems
while brousing other sites on IE.

Depending on your Zone settings (Default, if using a Firewall),
I would add the site to the "Trusted" zone. This allows a higher
level of actions than the generic "Internet" zone, which restricts
some functions. From IE, Click Tools, Internet Options, Security
left click "Trusted" to highlight, then the "Sites" button. Uncheck
the box "Require Server Verification". In the address box type
the URL of your genealogy site in the form of.
http://*.name.com
Now when you visit that site, in the lower right corner of IE, you
should see a green circle with a check mark in it and the words
"Trusted Sites" beside of it.
There are just too many variables on fixing IE/URL problems to
give you an exact answer (Cookies, Plug-ins, Java VM's, Anti-
Virus scanners,etc....)

Any specific software/controls needed to view that page? if so check those.
.
I have a subscription number and password for the
service. I have no problem accessing the subscription on
another computer.

I followed through with adding the website to the
trusted listing and the same problem occures. Any other
suggestions?

When you say IE crashes, does it just abruptly halt or is
there an exception/code box that appears on the screen ?
Is your XP up to date on all Windows Update Criticals ?

I have the latest patches from MS. It just crashes (shuts
down) with no warnings at all. It also happens on several
other websites but not on others.

This sounds like a caching problem. IE caches (saves) all
visited sites onto your hard drive. This is so if you re-visit
that page the data is retrieved from the disk and not re-loaded
from the site itself. Open IE, Click Tools, Internet Options.
In the middle of the applet is a button "Delete Files". Click
on this and then tic the "Delete all Off-line Data". Close IE
reboot and then retry your troublesome sites.

I have tried that approach several times to no avail. I
have tried Netscape and Mozilla brousers and have the
same problem on there brousers as well. It almost sounds
like a problem with XP and not necessary IE. I did a
system restore about 10 days ago and also defragmented
the HD. I did find a bad area on the disc. Its possible
theres a problem there. What would be the best way to
procede, etc? Is there a way to reinstall XP with out
distroying everything else?

(major snippage)

See, here's where giving all the pertinent information in the *first*
post is a Good Idea. If we'd all known you found a bad area on the hard
drive, you would have gotten totally different advice. Download a
diagnostic utility from your hard drive mftr. (on a different computer
if you can't get on line with the affected one) and test your hard
drive. If the hard drive is bad, replace it, clean install Windows,
reinstall programs from cd's, restore data from backups. If the hard
drive is bad, reinstalling XP is certainly not going to help. If you
can't do the hardware testing (and data rescue since I'm guessing you
haven't backed up) yourself, then take the computer to a good local
computer repair shop (not a Best Buy or CompUSA type of store).

Greetings. I hope you can help me. When I click on MY COMPUTER I now get a search light that lasts several minutes before my drives and main folders display. Before my A, D, E, and F drives (not my folders) displayed immediately so I could access info on them. Do you know how to fix this?

Could be your antivirus is scanning the items in My Computer before it opens.
