IE opens then immediately closes

For a single URL that I must access for work, IE finds and loads the page,
then immediately closes. It didn't always do this. I have no trouble with
my other computers, only one of them running IE 6.0.2900.2180 SP2. Any
suggestions would certainly be appreciated.

I've turned off all pop-up blockers, tried all the default security & privacy
settings, as well as manually turning them as off as possible.

The window is probably being closed by some sort of third-party filtering
software you have. You might want to check again. In particular, security
'suites' often contain other components seemingly unrelated to their main
purpose. For example, my firewall also comes with an ad blocker. The page is
loading, being evaluated by that software and then being closed.

Hi GalaxyMan :)

In addition to Ted's information, if you have a 3rd party program such as
Google or Yahoo toolbar, disable them. I fyou have Yahoo Companion
uninstall it, it is known to cause similar problems.

If it is just the one site, check your HOST file and see if the site has
been listed there
How to check Hosts file

Windows/host (it will not have an extension, and if there is more than one,
choose the one that says Application in a column to the right) . Right click
on it and select Open with.....when the window opens, scroll down the list
to Notepad. Once it opens in Notepad, scroll down the list to see if that
site is in the list. If so, DO NOT delete it, just go to the very front of
the line to the left and enter # in front of the line so that it looks
similar to the one below, as the entries with # in front will be ignored.

# Entries with other comments are searchable via Google.

Then click the save button and close. Then try the site again.

Well, no firewall and I disabled my anti-virus software. What's weird is
that yesterday just for the heck of it I went to that URL and I was shocked
when it loaded and let me into the site, etc. Then today I went to go there
again and I was back to my old problem. This used to work just fine on this
computer and I've not made any changes to any security or protective software
in the interim.

That host file thing looks interesting. What's the name and/or location of
the file and I'll check it out? Thanks again.

Hi GalaxyMan :)

To save your time reading the information I provided......

Check for a hosts file (justs "hosts" not hosts.sam or lmhosts) in these
locations:
Windows XP. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
You may have to enable the viewing of hidden files.

Enable Hidden Files:

To configure Windows to show all files

Do one of the following:
In Windows XP, on the taskbar, click Start > My Computer.
In Windows 2000/Me/98, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer
icon.
Do one of the following:
In Windows XP/2000/Me, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
In Windows 98, on the View menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Do one of the following:
In Windows XP/2000/Me, uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then,
under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
In Windows 98, in the Advanced Settings box, under the "Hidden files"
folder, click Show all files.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Rename your HOSTS file to OLDHOSTS then reboot and see if the problem
persists.

Hope this helps.

The location and filename did the trick locating it, but when I opened it to
what it says, there's only one local host there, 127.0.0.1. So that's not
the problem. :(

Did you try the rest of the information I provided? And from my previous
reply as well. You may have to go to the Internet using the links to find
the instructions or information for some. If you can't access the Internet
from the affected machine, print out the information and try it from another
machine or browser that can get Internet access.

Hope this helps.

I have read everything posted and tried everything posted and that I found in
the reading to no avail. I now find the same problem occuring on my laptop
which is also running XP SP2 and is totally updated software-wise.

Is there anyway to re-install IE so that I can at least start with a clean

Thanks again everyone for the ideas.

Hi GalaxyMan :)

Here are the instructions for the repair/reinstall of IE.

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318378

If you get a message that a newer version of IE is already installed, then
go here and run this utility to clear the Registry to allow you to reinstall
IE properly. Kelly's site has a fix which changes the IsInstalled flag
value to 0. This enables reinstallation of IE.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/reg...s/ieinstall.reg
Just download and double-click, then proceed to reinstal IE.

Hope this helps.
