IE opens only html docs, will not connect to mail client

WinXP SP 1
Recently two IE functions have ceased to work as they did previously.
Clicking on any type of document in a search engine other than
standard html brings up the "The page cannot be displayed" page. To
read these docs I must now secondary mouse click and choose "Save
Target" and d/l it which is a pain. While I don't remember changing
any IE settings, my guess is that I have and this is the result.

In a possibly related matter, I can no longer click a "Contact us"
link that previously opened my E-mail app. Now I get a message window
saying "Can not perform this operation because the default mail
client is not installed properly". It is the same functioning
installation that worked without protest also until recently - the
same recently as referenced in the first paragraph - I can not be
certain. Internet Options > Programs shows the correct mail app. I
clicked Reset Web Settings and nothing changed. There is nothing wrong
with the Eudora install , what needs to be adjusted in IE?

Please enlighten me.

Sincere thanks.

I should have added that all XP updates are applied except SP2.
The IE version is 6.0.2800.1106 xpsp2.050301-1526.

May not solve your problem, but for goodness sake, install SP2. It has been
thoroughly tested my millions of users.

First if it sais that the default mail client is not install properly you
should reinstall outlook. than if its still not working open IE go to tools -
Internet Option - Advenced Tab - Restore Default
