IE on XP prompt for Proxy PW when there is none

I have a XP/2000 network with an 2003 server running ISA 2000. I have most
of my clients running through the ISA because my ISA does not allow
downloads of exe files, and other stuff. When I want to run a special
update on a client, I will turn of the "Auto Detect" settings in the IE
connection tab so there is no proxy entries what so ever. I will also give
the workstation a static IP with a gateway so that it can go right out to
the Internet.

My problem is that after installing SP1 and the first round of Windows
Updates successfully, the computer keeps prompting for proxy authentication
when going to Win Update for the rest of the updates. Putting in my
password is no help because the ISA denies downloading the EXE, but I can't
see why these computers keep getting drawn to the ISA when automatic
configurations in IE are off and they have been manually given an IP.

It is not a Windows Update problem. It is local. IE is somehow discovering
that there is an ISA server on the network and even though I have the Auto
Detect off, it is still using the ISA at times.
