IE is DEAD

For some reason, IE 6 will not connect to the internet. I can connect
with Mozilla without any problem but IE 6 merely brings up the page that
the server could not be located.

I've tried two repairs:

1. Start/Run/sfc /scannow and then a reboot
and
2. Start/Search (all files and folders)/More Advanced Options (Search
Hidden Files and Folders... including Subfolders)/ie.inf

When the ie.inf file was located I right clicked it and clicked on
Install. That brought up a request for my WindowsXP Service Pack 1 CD. I
put that in and it asked for the path. I tried everything I could think
of but no go.

At this point I have about given up ever repairing IE short of running a
reformat on the computer (I have a reformat cd so it wouldn't be overly
difficult, just very inconvenient).

I have Windows XP Home and yes...I did try a Restore but still... no go.

Any ideas?????

IE is not dead, just suffering from lack of brain activity

First, have you tried MSCONFIG?
Have you disabled 3rd party browser extensions?

Let me know.

Certain el cheapo dialup most intrusive software like peoplepc and
others tend to phark IE. Perhaps you've tried an el-cheapo dial up ware.

Hi James,

See if this helps, without knowing how IE is dead:

IE Crashes - Browse in New Process (Line 313) Right hand side
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Internet Explorer quits intermittently and unexpectedly after you install
the Q323734 hotfix
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822755

If the above does not apply:

Go to Windows Explorer and open your i386 folder and try again when it gets
to that point: See other for more details below.

Run Command - Reinstalling Internet Explorer (Line 29)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Manual Edit:

Re-install IE - Go to Start/Run, and type :
"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\inf\ie.inf"

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP

Other: SFC asking for SP1 CD

Put the regular CD in the drive first, exit its Autorun, then run the
SFC. It should then find the SP1 files in the Windows\ServicepackFiles
folder, and go on from there to the versions on the regular CD.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup.
In the right pane, change the value of ServicePackSourcePath for those
having SP1 on CD and wanting to route it separately.
