IE homepage won't open.

Hi,

When I click on the IE icon in the task bar, nothing happens.
When I repair IE ( CONTROL PANEL | ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS | MS IE6 SP1 and
INTERNET TOOLS | REPAIR IE | OK | RESTART) and click the IE icon again, it
"works" to the extent that I get the MSN homepage, but when I click CONTINUE
at the bottom of that page, a messagebox briefly flashes on the screen with
a YES somewhere in it. However before I can use it, it vanishes, and I'm
back to "Square 1"............. The IE icon again has no effect.

I've checked earlier relevant posts but found none matching my symptoms.
One poster suggested checking the IE icon PROPERTIES, specifically TARGET
where I found a perfect match, but also START IN which I found to be empty,
and that I hope is significant to someone out there!

I'm still able to open websites.....
I've run spyware & malware scans as well as virus scans. The machine seems
to be clean.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Andy I. (WIN 98SE; IE/OE 6)

Hi brackenburn :)

Did you run HiJackThis? If not, then you should do so, as you may have a
hijacker which can not be detected or cleaned by your ani-spyware or
anti-virus.

It should be run in Safe Mode:

Hi "ras",

I've entered your suggestion in "Start In" but it has made no difference.
One other thing might be a clue:
In the IE icon properties, SHORTCUT KEY reads "None". (Not empty. The word
"None"is there.)

Andy I.

| The 'Start in' should read: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

Hi Andy :)
EUREKA!! The following seems to have fixed it:

Internet Shortcuts in Outlook Express Don't Start Browser
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q177/0/54.asp

even though the icon was not an "Internet Shortcut".
The IE icon Properties still has the SHORTCUT KEY entry as the word
"none",
but it's working.

Thanks guys, for your interest and advice.
Andy I.

You're very welcome! Glad to hear you were able to resolve your problem.
Good job!

Thank you for posting back and letting us know what worked for you, and for
the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem. :)
