IE has encountered a problem...

A Window pops open with "IE has encountered a problem and
needs to close..." when trying to access most (but not
all) web sites. App= iexplore.exe 6.0.2800.1106
ModName= msvcrt.dll
My OS is Windows 98. I had IE 5.5, so tried updating to
IE 6.0. Didn't help. I updated and ran my Norton
VirusScan. Didn't help. I dowloaded Spybot Search &
Destroy and it found 88 files, and fixed them. Didn't
help. I am at a loss what to try next.
All help will be greatly appreciated...

Try to access the websites below and download and install them, but, you
*must* updated AdAware prior to running it. Use the update feature in the
program to do the update. Then run it and the CWShredder. AdAware usually
will find things SpyBot does not, as they have different definitions.

AdAware: Free

I already have CWShredder; it found one file and fixed
it. But everytime I try to download AdAware, I get
the 'Encountered an error...' window and it kicks me out.
Sigh. But thanks for trying to help!

I had the same problem start last night. AdAware got the
bug after I updated the version. I already had an older
version on the computer. Try updating CDShredder.
Good luck!!

Try these programs and see if they help. It sounds as if you may have a
hijacker.
follow the directions carefully. If you can't assess the websites for
these, then go to a computer that can burn CD's and download the AdAware,
and these two programs to the hard drive, then burn them to the CD and
install them on the infected machine, and run them. I think you should be
able to get to the website to post your HiJackThis log, if not do so on
another computer. The experts will tell you what you need to delete, if
anything, and explain what you need to do. You can do that without needing
to access the Internet. The Stinger is fully loaded when you get it so just
install and run it.

Do the HiJackThis first and post the log right away, the instructions below
explain how to do the log.

Also, see if you can get an On-line scan here.

HiJackThis: - Free

Go to
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html ,
or
http://tinyurl.com/2oce8
or
http://tinyurl.com/2atxk

and download HiJackThis. Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the
Temp folder, doubleclick HiJackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button. Press that, save the log some place you remember where it is. Most
of
what it lists will be harmless or even required, so DO NOT fix anything yet.

Open a the copy of your log in NotePad and made a copy. Then you can go here
to post you log:
http://forum.aumha.org/

Go to the HiJackThis section on the forum list and click to open. You can
post as a guest. It's also a good site to keep for reference. The experts
there will analyze the log and report back the results. Please allow at
least a few hours or a days time for a response.

Remember, you must return to the HJT site to get your answer. It is a good
idea to click the "Notify" box so that you will get an electronic
notification by e-mail to let you know when a response has been posted.
But, you must still return to the site of your answer

Just thought I would let you know how it's going... I was
able to download and run HiJackThis, got the log copied,
went to AumHa website to post it. Couldn't get on as a
guest, so I registered, and am still waiting for
authorization to post. In the meantime, decided to
install Netscape and try downloading AdAware that way.
Eureka! It found 28 nasties; fixed them. But "IE has
encountered a problem..." message still pops up randomly
and throws me back out of IE. So will wait for
authorization to post on AumHA and hope they can tell me
something from my log. THANKS!

Very good to hear. Be sure if you can to download, install, and run the
Spybot as well. SpyBot and AdAware have different difinitions, so what one
does not find the other often does. Try that while you are waiting, it will
be good for your system too.
I'll be waiting to here the next report. :)

Well, I give up. I got my HiJack log posted and quickly
got a reply (those guys are the greatest!)and 'fixed' the
2 entries they found. But still get kicked off most
websites. I have done all I can think of; Updated IE to
6.0, updated and ran Norton VirusScan, updated and ran
CWShredder, Spybot S&D and AdAware. No luck. The odd
thing is, I have no trouble at all surfing the same sites
using Netscape. Soooo, guess I will just stick to
Netscape from now on...
Thanks a bunch, you've been terrific help!

You are very welcome. I am sorry that all your hard work has not enabled
you to get your IE problem resolved. Perhaps one of the guru's here will
have a fix for you. It may be something simple that I am not aware of.
But, I'm very glad that you are able to get Internet access with Netscape
for now anyway.
