IE hang issue is very frustrating..please help me solve it if you can

while i am surfing my internet explorer appears to hang, however the globe in the right corner spins and the staus bar would say it was detecting proxy settings. no rhyme or reason as to when it happens. it may work fine for 20-30 minutes or it may happen every 3-4 clicks. i followed the instructions given for unchecking the box for automatic detection in the LAN settings and the only difference i can see is that the status bar no longer says *detecting proxy settings*. but it still hangs and the globe continues to spin. if i open an additional browser window while waiting for the first one nothing loads until the original window loads. i have even tried to open outlook and do a send\receive but until that original browser window loads all i get is the msg saying that outlook is connecting to the server. this only happens on my laptop it does not occur on any of the 3 other computers i have on my home network. the laptop is using 98 se and the others are using XP and we all connect thru the router to the cable modem. this so frustrating and any help would be greatly appreciated. this occurs whether i am the only one on my home network or when my son or husband are online also. i have found several articles about IE doing this when it is first opened but i rarely have it happen until i have clicked thru few pages then it suddenly stops for about a minute before finally kicking in.
thank you in advance to any that respond

sshhameless1,
The first thing to do is to scan your system for the possibility of
unknown\unwanted spyware or parasites that may be causing your problem(s).

sshhameless1,
Is the Proxy required by your ISP, or is this something you selected?

Go to: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware]

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates: "hijackthis.log")

Next, go to the below location:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/

Sign in, go to the "Spyware and Hijackware Removal" section.
Press "New Topic", copy and paste hijackthis.log into your new message.
