I find that after some time, my IE fails to connect to the net even though
other programs have no problem, eg icq, bittorrent. All I get is the Unable
to connect message.

I'm on Win XP Pro with SP1 installed. Its connected to a DSL modem via LAN
cable and theres nothing wrong with the connection. The isp has no proxies
provided and I usually have to overcome this problem by rebooting but it
still comes back after some time.

HI Malcolm :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Prevent IE from disconnecting with DSL or cable connection:

Control Panel
Network and Dialup Connections
Local Area Connection
Properties
Configure
Power Management
Uncheck both boxes on this dialog sheet

Hope this helps.

ICQ & BitTorrent are your connectivity issues.
Uninstall them, reboot and post back with your findings.

icq and bittorrent do not appear to be the problem as they do not use up much
of my bandwith as I am using ADSL and I've been using them together with IE
before. The problem arose when I switched to another network using my LAN
port without setting any proxies. Usually when I set the proxies in IE it
will work but is there a solution whereby IE can detect the connection
without even setting the proxy?

Generally, a LAN does not require a proxy for IE, if they exist on your machine,
disable them and get rid of ICQ and BitTorrent - check with your ISP's newsgroup
or Forum whether BitTorrent is blocked at the server level.
