The IE Error Report generates a "appcompat.txt" file.
This can usually be found in:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Temp\

Paste the contents (if found) in your next message.

"I did a search for syshx.dll and it came up with nothing"

To allow yourself to view all file types,
open Windows Explorer Folder Options - View [tab]:

Scroll down to the Hidden Files and Folders section
Select: "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck: "Hide file extensions for known file types"
Uncheck: " Hide protected operating system files"
Ok the Prompt, click Apply, Ok

Hi,
This might be a parasite problem.
Work through the solutions (CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot) at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security tips on that
page.

Additional information at:
The Parasite Fight http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
Bugs, Glitches & Stuffups: http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm

If not caused by malware, consider disabling (for diagnostic purposes)
legitimate programs running in the background which might be interacting
with IE- security, antivirus, ad-blockers, toolbars & other add-ons, etc.
You may have to uninstall then reinstall, or not reinstall, a program. I ran
across one report that Yahoo Companion was the culprit.

Some users have had this problem with MSN Messenger. This article may help
(even if you don't use MSN Messenger.)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q317277

Hope this helps,

Hello, my friend is having the same problem on his computer. When the
error message appears and I click on the link to see the error report, the
following file is mentioned in the report:
c:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER4.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt I am unable to
locate this file by either using search or by following the file path, even
when I "show hidden files." When I search for it the file does not exist.
Also, every time I try to open IE and the error occurs, the filename in the
report changes and again I an unable to locate it. Sometimes it is WER4,
sometimes WER6, etc. I have tried to use System Restore but I get a message
saying the computer is unable to restore to that point. I have tried 7 or
more different restore points, all on different days.

Hello, my friend is having the same problem on his computer.

If you are going to reply in threads which are over two months old
PLEASE include some of the original discussion.

The OP was complaining of a crash in syshx.dll
Is that your case too?

Mike Burgess told him that it was not a standard module
so the the reasonable thing to do would be to find out what application
it was associated with and remove or repair it.

The Error Reporting Tool seems to make inaccessible temporary
files and then delete them after they are sent. Next time try doing
your search *before* clicking on Send or after clicking on Send while
Work Offline is set, etc.

BTW I hope you are aware that you will not find that path literally.
It is an 8.3 equivalent representation of the full pathname.
If the file really existed, even if it was marked hidden, you would be able
to open it in Notepad just by copying and pasting that full file name into
Notepad's open file dialog.

However, that is not immediately the most useful diagnostic.
Unless the Error Signature is exactly as the OP gave you should
report your own. (Click on the <click here> link and capture the
Error Signature by dragging your mouse over the text and pressing
Ctrl-c.)

IE would not open. As soon as I started it the error message would appear saying it has encountered a problem and needs to close. IE is working now after I followed the suggestions at this link: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm I ran Adaware and Spybot and will continue with HijackThis when I get a chance. (I can't find my original post where Don Varneau suggested that my problem was caused by Spyware, etc.) But thank you for the tip: "The Error Reporting Tool seems to make inaccessible temporary files and then delete them after they are sent. " I am very greatful and relieved now that IE is working again. I am also very glad to have more knowledge about Spyware and tools to deal with it. Thank you again
