IE default mail pops up

When I'm surfing the internet, my outlook express pops up
out of nowhere. It does this very randomly, but only
usually when I'm writing an email or surfing the
internet. It's like the computer is always trying to
open outlook express, even when it is open.. Any clues.

Is this a laptop and is OE configured to poll for new mail on a schedule?
