IE Cumulative 834707 OK (on W2K) ---> 873377 ??

Hello,

The question I try to confirm below is, "do I need", "how to I", install the
follow-up "rollup" to 834707 (which is KB 873377).

My system Win 2000 Pro (SP4), IE v6.0.2800.1106 (followed by 'CO'), Cipher
Strength 128-bit, Update Versions SP1, followed by eight Q’#'s.

Last Wed Oct 13, I obtained and installed 5 updates both MBSA and Win Update
site said I needed. The last one being KB834707 (which translates to
MS04-038. I gather).

The other four updates I got that day were: KB886179 (Journal Viewer) &
three W2K Security Updates (KB841356, KB840987, KB841533). These not an issue
(I believe).

I got no further installs needed (have "fixed" MBSA with MSXML version/SP)
from either source.

The latter update, KB 834707, A Cumulative Security Update for Internet
Explorer 6 SP 1, related articles:

MS04-038: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;834707

Which points to KB 873377,

An update rollup is available for Internet Explorer 6 SP1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873377

The last, a list of Security Hot Fixes not included in the "Cumulative" above.

This I know you (all) know, but saying it to make sure it’s correct...

I've looked at them, most say please wait, only install if you need it. (I
think that must be before the individuals were bundled into 873377 ?). The
implication, to wait for the next "Cumulative". The last two Cumulatives were
(2004aug04, KB867801), (2004Feb02, KB832894).

Security Updates in between these Cumulatives, obtained and detected by Win
Update page.

Unless any info on when can expect the next "Cumulative", I would prefer to
keep pace with the hot fixes, as they are available.

Question (finally):

This in between updates won't be detected by an automatic (or "semi"-auto,
like the Win Update site, which I much prefer to do) method anymore? (i.e. I
never noticed the "fine" print, about 873377, which has further fine prints
about the Hot fixes there in.)

I guess, more simply, if this is true, is the reason most people installed
the in-between's automatically (like I did, almost said "blindly", and also
almost said "trustingly")...?

Well, is the update rollup 873377 (only) a command line install (with
switches). I have no SMS server nor network, just a single machine. (Again,
any real news about next "Cumulative", or as the individual updates says to
"wait for the next IE 6 Service Pack.)

Is IE 6 SP2 (for Windows 2000) pending soon?

Thanks,
Michael
