IE crashes with Wininet.dll

Ok, here's the problem
PC is a Dell 4400 (2yrs old) with WinXP Home edition
had shut down the PC and rebooted (nothing out of the normal reasons) No
when ever I try and access the internet with IE, ( on some pages eg MS
groups) It crashes with wininet.dl

error message at this lin

what have I done
1: Installed the latest rollup patch for IE 6
2: Installed SP1a over SP
3: tried to over write the wininet.dll with one from another PC, it kept o
saying that it is protected

At some cases it even causes the whole PC to freeze up

Kinda very stuck at the moment and cannot really workout what can be done t
fix this problem

Many kind regards for any help or tips on how to fix this ..

This behavior can occur for one of the following reasons:

1. One or more cache files in the Temporary Internet Files folder may be
damaged.
2. The History folder or the cache folders used by Internet Explorer are
damaged.
3. The index files used to track the contents of the History or cache
folders are dam
