IE crashes when downloading .pdf files

Having a strange problem here, hopefully someone will have a suggestion:

Two of my users are trying to access a local government web page and browse
some licensing documents that are in .pdf format. When either of them click
a link to open one of the files, IE crashes.

However, the person in the office next door can open the same file without a
problem. The only difference between the two users with the problem and the
one without is in the IE version information.

The user with the working IE lists the version as
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2.qfe.070227-2254

The users with the non-working IE both show
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2.qfe.070227-2300

Don't know what's going on, but it seems to have something to do with the
different versions of IE. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
Maybe someone else will jump in. Until then...
The 2 machines have had different updates/patches/hotfixes installed. I
don't know what the difference is between 2254 and 2300.
Two steps I would try...
1. Uninstall / reinstall Adobe Reader.
2. From Adobe Reader> Edit> Preferences> Internet> uncheck "Display PDF in
browser."

Other possibilities:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/pdf.htm

Hope this helps,
Don

Thanks for the feedback, Don. Sorry for the delay, but I couldn't get back
onsite until today. I'm not sure it's Adobe, because this doesn't happen on
every .pdf link, just some. I'll check out the link you sent. Anyone have
any other ideas?
