IE corrupted by Adone Acrobat - how can I fix it?

G

Guest

I installed Adobe Acrobat Professional 7 and now I no longer want it.
However, when I uninstall it IE no longer works. IE launches but is
corrupted - most likely because Adobe Acrobat fools around with its toolbar.
I have tried various registry cleaners but to no avail. Am currently stuck
using Firefox - can anyone help me restore by IE installation?

Hi Brad :)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, nor it if was a full
pruchase verison of the Adobe Acrobat 7 or a trial version. This does seem
to be a fairly common problem with uninstalling version 7.

Another poster here has had much the same problem after uninstalling the
trail version of AA7.

See if the following will help:

First, if you have XP or Win ME, try doing a system restore back to a date
prior to the date you installed the new program and see if that helps.

If no joy, then do the following:

Be sure that you unintsalled the program from Add/Remove programs. If you
have another version of AA, uninstall it as well. After uninstalling both
versions, close out, log off and reboot the system. Then download install
and use this Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and remove the installation
configuration settings for Adobe Acrobat.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
This should give you a clean slate for re-installing the older version
without any residuals of the trial version.

Also...for the time being, disable any 3rd party programs, such as toobars,
ad or popup blockers, and auto updating for all programs, including windows.

Hope this helps.

This is a very diffucult question to answer. It appears that the trail
version of this program really gums up the works when you try to uninstall
it. You are the second person in this newsgroup in the past few days with
this same problem from using this trial program, and we have not heard back
from the other poster if they were able to get back up and running yet
either. Seems Adobe is not responding to requests for assitance on the
issue.

If uninstalling both programs and then reinstalling the older version after
running the utility, and doing a system restore to a data prior to when you
installed the trail version did not did not resolve the problem, then I can
only suggest two things:

It may be that your Registry files have been corrupted. Make sure both

Hi Jan,

Still no luck. As per your suggestions:

1. The utility you mentioned does not list Adobe Acrobat as one of its
options so I cannot run it.
2. I treid twice to restore to a point before I installed Acrobat but both
times it said it could not restore to this point (what is the point of it
then I ask???)
3. Restore registry - only helps if I have backed up the registry before I
installed Acrobat - I hadn't.
4. Installed XP SP2 - no difference.
5. iexplore.exe /rereg - did this and nothing seemed to happen.

Apart from reinstalling windows - isn't their some way I can get a fresh

do a full repair of XP.

This can be done without much pain by following the instructions here
carefully:

Just backup as any important data just in case. This should fully repair the
system, yet leaving most of your files, programs, settings, and such in
tact, save some personalized settings you may have to reset.

Hope this helps.

It would probably have helped to have described your symptoms
more clearly. E.g. what *exactly* are you seeing to cause you to claim
"IE launches but is corrupted"?

IMO I don't think an XP Repair is something which should be considered
lightly, especially if you don't have a slipstreamed CD to run the repair from.
The first and only time that I tried it I ended up with a totally trashed system
which I had to rebuild from scratch. There are several hidden "gotcha's"
buried in the KB which I only discovered after trying it.

BTW if you want to use iexplore.exe /rereg
be aware that there are errors in the provided ieuinit.inf file
which cause that repair to be less effective than it might be.
FWIW here are some comments about that.

<excerpt>
If you would like to try it there are four lines which need to be modified.
Specifically I found the following errors on mine (mostly to do with whether
there is a DllRegisterServer entry point or just a DllInstall entry point
in each of the following modules:

%11%\comctl32.dll,NI
%11%\digest.dll,NI
%11%\inetcpl.cpl,NI (I deleted the first and left this.)
;%11%\msapsspc.dll (I actually deleted this line.)

To be clear the above lines are my corrections. In order to make them
in your copy simply open %windir%\System32\ieuinit.inf in Notepad,
find each module name and make the appropriate change.

To summarize I appended ,NI to the lines which contain comctl32 and digest;
I deleted the line which contained inetcpl.cpl without the switches
and I deleted the line which contained msapsspc. If you prefer you could convert
both deletions to comments by inserting a semicolon (;) in column 1 of those two lines
(as I was forced to do for my last example.)

Making those four changes allowed the whole section to execute cleanly.

</excerpt>

Finally, be aware that IE6 is only a stand-alone application in XP
in the combination IE6sp1 under XP base. If you have XPsp2
in order to download and install IE6sp1 you would have to first
uninstall both XPsp2 and XPsp1. (I am not recommending that
you do that but simply explaining why you can't install IE6 under
your OS.)

Jan/Robert,

Still no luck. I did what Jan suggested before I read Robert's comments.
My system works but IE now doesn't open at all:

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience."

Robert - ieuinit.inf file does not have the lines you specified in it.

So - where do I go from here?

If you mean you have done an XP repair that's what I meant:
it wipes stuff out to XP base.

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Repeat:

Remember: your words have to substitute for what our eyes might notice.

Robert - ieuinit.inf file does not have the lines you specified in it.

Again, probably because of the XP repair.
Unless you did one from a slipstreamed CD, I suspect
you no longer have even XPsp1; hence you would only have
the equivalent of IE6 which is integrated into XP base.

So - where do I go from here?

Remember what I said about having to rebuild? <eg>

However, you at least have a bootable system.

Ironically at this point you probably could install IE6sp1
without any difficulty at all. That at least could give you
the benefit of having a real IE Repair for later use. <w>

Then you can try reinstalling XPsp2 and all your maintenance
again.

Thanks,

Brad

Good luck

Hi Brad :)

There are various issues that can cause this error, and as RWS has
suggested, knowing the exact wording of the error message could be a good
clue.

First, if you have any 3rd party toolbars such as Google, MSN or Yahoo,
disable them. If you have Yahoo Companion, uninstall it, it is known to
cause various problems.

Disable any 3rd party popup or ad blockers

Another known third-party interferer is Norton's Internet Security 2000:

Reset all IE functions: Go to Start>Run> and type the following, one at a
time, and press enter after each line. A message will appear stating that
these have been registered successfully.

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll (this command only for Win2000 and XP)
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

then OK out and reboot.

also...

Download and run this fix
