IE BETA 2

Paul Montgomery

V E R Y N I C E !

Lots of bells and whistles, very little in the way of cosmetic
changes.

No stability problem so far and it's quite speedy. I've only found
one problem while making my usual web rounds: it has some serious
problems with Google Groups.

First: GG has to be run in "compatibility mode" or it won't even load
(an IE popup tells the user to switch to that mode). but after that
it's quite crippled once the tree view of a thread is shown.

My browser of choice has been FF3 since it was first released and I
hoped that IE8 would handle address bar history like FF3 does, but it
doesn't ;-(

Paul, do you also find with Gmail that when you want to file an email away
and come to select a folder from the 'more actions' menu that the list of
folders jumps around making it impossible to select a folder. The problem is
solved in compatibility view but not in standard view.

Hi John,

I don't use the web version of Gmail. I use Outlook 2003 and Outlook
Connector. Windows Live Mail also USED to work for Gmail, but I think
I read in the release notes that IE8 is not yet working with WLM.

IE8 requires that a website conform to very strict standards when it
comes to CSS, etc. That's why IE7 Compatibility mode is there.

Just looked at the web version after I wrote the above. My "more
options" doesn't have a list of folders. What it DOES have, displays
and works just fine.

Maybe you have some add-ons loaded that are interfering?

I installed IE7Pro yesterday and think it was causing me some problems
so I uninstalled it - just in case.

I Am Very Impressed With It As Well, A Whole Lot Less Website Compatibility
Problems Than With Beta 1, It Works Much Better Than Beta 1 As Well (Less
Crashes), Just FYI.

To limit the confusion: Outlook 2003 does Gmail without a plug-in.
Outlook Connector is for Hotmail and shouldn't have been mentioned.

Gmail can be accessed through IMAP or POP3 protocols, with any email
program, including Windows Live Mail.

And what do you mean that IE8 does not work with Windows Live Mail? Did you
mean Hotmail?

How can you be impressed? You can't work IE. You can't even work the
programs in Vista. All you can do is install Vista, Uninstall Vista,
install Ubuntu and uninstall Ubuntu.

I see that a webpage translator has been included. Why, oh why have they
done this, bearing in mind that online translators massacre languages?

Translated to German

"Ich sehe, daß ein Webseite übersetzer eingeschlossen worden ist. Warum OH-,
warum sie dies getan haben, bedenkend, daß on-line-übersetzer Sprachen
massakrieren?"

and then back to English..

"I see that web page was included a translator. Why considering OH, why they
did this, that on-line translators languages massakrieren?"

We have now reached the point where neither a German or Brit can understand
the written word.

I meant exactly what I said. From the release notes:

"Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 and Windows Live Mail are currently
incompatible. If you install Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2, Windows Live
Mail will crash when you create or reply to an e-mail message. No
workaround is currently available."

The programmers do acknowledge that IE7Pro has some problems with IE8b2
but they're waiting until IE8 is complete before they'll fix the
problems.

They'll also be renaming the app since it's not IE7 specific. I'm
thinking IEPro.

Paul, WLM seems to work okay for me. No problems creating emails and no
problems posting to newsgroups (or replying)

The incompatibly must be on mailto: links within IE8, when WLM is the
default email program.

Hi John,

Just tried it and it works fine here too. Maybe they got a fix in
after those release notes were written, or maybe the notes were
written because SOME systems had problems.

J

John Barnett MVP

Hi Paul,

I suppose it could be that some people are experiencing problems while
others are not. I wasn't best pleased when I read about WLM in the release
notes as I've only jut got WLM running how I want it. That was all I needed
was to not be able to use it to create/reply to emails:)
