IE and windows explorer go to 95%> CPU utilization

My Mom has an eMachine 633 which has Win2k installed on it.

It has begun doing something very odd. If I try to open
up windows explorer or Internet Explorer, CPU utilization
goes to well over 95% and stays there, without opening up
the application.

I have Win2k SP 4 running. This just started to happen.

Does anyone have any idea about this one?

Could be a number of things causing the problem. When in
windows right click the task bar and click on Task
Manager. Click on processes, an you will find one of them
using 97-100% of the cpu time.

once you know this you can start looking for the solution.

yes

the processes that are using such a high %age of the CPU
are...

iexplore.exe and explorer.exe

*cough*
