IE and StartUp Programs

Following instructions that I received, I was attempting to disable all programs in the Startup group, except EXPLORER and SYSTRAY, so that I could get a good download of IE 6. For whatever the explanation, Explorer and Systray are no longer in my Startup group. I just recently installed Norton System Works. As I recall, the program found and corrected about 100 registry problems. I wonder is this is the explanation. And, I do not know if this is related, but I did find sgtray and s3tray2. Incidentally, I did not find Norton Virus Protection in the startup group. I did find the Norton GoBack. As it is, sometimes Windows will not shut down (sometimes, but not all the time). I have no choice, but to turn off the power. The other thing that happens is that when I click on to turn off my computer, I get the message that Sgtray is ending the program. But then, I get another message stating that sgtray is not responding. I have Windows XP. How do I correct whatever is going wrong. Thanks again for all your help.

What Norton fine in registry to delete is not usually safe. You probably
deleted some needed processes or registry. Go back to Norton and restore
what you deleted.

If no joy, perform a system restore to get back to where you were before
deleting the registry.

If no joy, perform a repair install of your computer.
