IE abnormal close

I have windows 98 with IE 6. Occassionally when loading a web page the
following error comes up: "Microsoft IE has encountered a problem and needs
to close. Sorry for the inconvenience." When I look at the error details it
refers to "mshtml.dll" I have downloaded a patch from microsoft for what
seems to be a similar problem, but when I run it, it's comes up with a
message that IE 6 needs to be loaded first. Which it is. I have run spybot,
and tried a couple of IE option changes, but nothing seems to fix the problem.

Any suggestions?
