I'm getting up to 15 instances of ie explorer.exe running
on this computer at the same time with the browser off
and no internet activity. they show up when I bring up
the task manager. each proccess will be using up to 15000
k of memory and will finally bog the system down.I just
stopped all startup apps in msconfig and am firewalled.Am
i being hacked? any body heard of this before?

yes you have been hijacked...
Download, install, *update* and run these two programs:
Ad-aware from http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Spybot from http://security.kolla.de/ (Remove items
listed in red.)
