I cannot bring up IE. The screen flashes, all icons disappear & then return. Same problem with My Computer & Control Panel. I also cannot get to IE thru any links, same thing happens. Other MS Office apps not impacted. Runing Windows XP Home Edition.

Joe,
This is probably being caused by third party programs- malware/parasites.

From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to work.

You might also be able to browse and download programs from the address bar
of Windows Explorer.

Download and run Run CWShredder from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be downloaded from another
machine onto a floppy disk if necessary.

Then download, install, *update* and run both of these programs:
Ad-aware from http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Spybot from http://security.kolla.de/ (Remove items listed in red-others are
optional.)
Both programs should be updated after installation- before use.

If these programs don't remove the malware, HijackThis should be used to
post a log to the appropriate forum at one of these sites.

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.

I have a client with this problem. She can't get into Control Panel, same
problem with icons. I may try a full reinstall, reset the registry key as
described in KB Article 31837 unless anyone knows a way to change that
setting without getting into IE or Control Panel.

There's a CoolWebSearch variant which makes Control Panel unavailable. Try
CWShredder, followed by Ad-aware and Spybot.

And... CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be downloaded from
another machine onto a floppy disk if necessary, or sent via e-mail.
