IE 6 constant ghost windows

I have IE 6 on XP Home Edition. The other day, when I
started a browser session, my home page came up fine.
about 3 - 5 seconds latera blank browser poperd up and
could not be cancelled. Such browsers kept open every 3 -
5 seconds. I ended up having to kill the process tree
in the task manager to close the blank browsers. I
cannot find a virus with this behavior although it could
be.

Any pointers appreciated.
