When I type into the location bar "www.google.com" (without the quotes), the browser's home page comes up, regardless of what site I was originally on. if I type in "http://www.google.com" then I can get to google's website. I've checked the hosts and lmhosts files, found nothing in there, checked all settings, reinstalled, etc. but still have this problem. Any one have any ideas

Check the below Registry entries vs. yours:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix]
Default="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"
