IE 6 and deleting index.dat

I am using Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2. The computer freezes
every 3-4 days when using IE. The Tif file is set to 50 MB and although I
clear the history and delete Temporary Internet files via IE Tools/Internet
Option/General Tab, I still have to delete the index.dat file in order to
surf the net. The process to do this is getting old and tiresome. The only
way I have found to delete it is to boot into safe mode, access the
Administrator account, go to the command prompt, enter the information to get
to the Owner's Temporary Internet folder and then Content. This never
happened with Windows XP Service Pack 1. Does anyone know of an easier way
to do this in simple language before I lose all my hair? Oh yes, I have
tried giving permission to another user account, but that don't work either.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

The short answer is try CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ This will clear
the index.dat as well as many other features.

It sounds however, that you may have other underlying issues. Be sure to
update your Antivirus and do a complete system scan in Safe Mode. Also,
download the following (free) Anti Spyware/Adware/Hackware programs. Keep
them updated and use regularly.

Hi,
Rather than deleting index.dat files, I would delete the TIF folder or
History folder. That deletes all content including the index.dat files.

But, CCleaner (freeware) from http://www.ccleaner.com/ can reportedly clear
index.dat files if that box is checked. Give it a try.

Hope this helps,
