IE 6.0 won't close or minimize

B

Bob

I have been having this problem on and off. When I try
to close or minimize an IE window, nothing happens. The
window won't close or minimize. When I open the Windows
Task Manager, nothing is listed in the applications
area. The only way I can get rid of the IE window is to
logoff or restart the computer.
Any clues on what the problem is?

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back

I have been having similar problems- I can minimize IE
window, but it won't close. When I open the Task Manager,
it says IE is running. I have to "end task" to get the
window to close.
This just started happening when a family member was
using my computer to download files (faster with my DSL)
to save to disk- I have to wonder if we inadvertently
downloaded some sort of SpyWare- I have heard that they
can make programs do unwanted things!
If you hear or learn anything, let me know!

I've had this same problem that Tammy speaks of. I tried
all the solutions given earlier and all the ones above
except posting the log of Hijack. I'll do that, but I
still have no idea what the issue is. Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks for your help!
I installed, updated and ran both AdAware and SpyBot.
Spybot found 69 malware and AdAware found 88! I also
downloaded Windows Update for XP SP1 and it's update.
I can now close IE!
I do have one small problem still.. when I open my
Favorites and click on one of them, it will not go to
that site. Is this still related?
Thanks Again!
Tammy

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Bob

it's nice to know you got your problem solved,
tammyncook. Meanwhile I am still having problems with my
computer, as per the original post. Maybe you should
have started your own post, cause your problem was not
the same one I was having.

Frank,
I saw your reply and I'm working on implementing that
solution. My last post was directed at tammyncook. The
problem she was having was not identical to the problem I
was having.
thanks for your help. I'll post a reply when I get this
sorted out. It's taking a very long time for me run the
programs you referred me too.

BobAnonymous-
Sorry I replied to your post- I didn't see Frank's reply
to check for scumware right away. Silly me, I mistakenly
thought that this forum was for communication and problem
solving. Sounds like you have an MVP working on your
problem anyway even though I replied to your post.
