IE 6.0 SP2 does not read URL correctly passing userid and password

Internet Explorer 6.0 SP2 does not parse a url of the following format to
allow for login to a website http://userid:password@website. IE 6.0 sp1
works correctly while SP2 places the whole URL line in the address bar and
gets an unable to open page error. The problem is not related to a setting or
group policy.
I was unable to find any reference to this in the Microsoft Knowledge base.
Has anyone experienced this issue with IE 6.0 SP2 on Windows XP SP2 ?
Is there a fix?

Hi,
That change came from a security update about 2 years ago. IE 6.0 SP1 should
also not be able to pass on login information like that if updates have been
applied.

834489 - A security update is available that modifies the default behavior
of Internet Explorer for handling user information

There is a workaround (registry edit) in that article, but you'll be
reopening a security vulnerability.

Hope this helps,
