IE 6.0 not resolving DNS

D

donald

I have tried everything. I cleared NetBIOS cache, DNS
cache, arp table, route table, verified DNS suffix, DNS
server address, proxy settings ... etc. I can ping
anything anywhere. I can type an IP address for any
website and it will display in the browser but for my life
I cannot type anything like www.yahoo.com and get a web
page to come up. I have no earthly idea what needs to be
done now? I have reinstalled IE 6.0/via add remove
windows components, uninstalled and reinstalled every
protocol, service, etc and still nothing. I have reset
all settings in IE to default and nothing. I can display
an intranet page but not the world wide web. What is
going on?????????????? Thanks in advance.

Maybe qhost trojan. See here:

I agree with Bob, it sounds like the QHosts trojan.

I used the Symantec removal tool and it found nothing. I
am going to do a reinstall. Thanks for the idea. If I
discover the problem before the reinstall I will post it
here.

I had one case where I used the Symantec removal tool and it also reported
finding nothing. I confirmed that the registry was OK according to their
manual fix instructions and found nothing incorrect. I finally found a
rogue hosts file that contained a long list of sites. I deleted the
contents of the rogue hosts file and all was then ok.
