ie 6.0 closes pages

all of a sudden IE 6.0 will only allow me to have 1
browser open at a time. It will close whichever one is
open if i click on a link or try to open a new browser
from the desktop. I tried downloading ie 6.0 again and
reinstalling it but didn't have any luck. Any
suggestions?

Ryan,
I was also having this problem and have the post right
after yours. I was looking at other posts I found one
that talked about the setting "enable third party browser
extensions" under tools, internet options, advanced. I
unchecked this and restarted and I am now able to get
multiple browsers opened. I don't know what changed. I
had to reload my hard drive because of problems with my
firewall/virus software. After reloading windows, I then
loaded my security software and then loaded the current
IE. My son then reloaded some other internet software.
Not sure at which point it started closing the browsers,
but unchecking this option resolved my problem.

Yahoo Companion is a 3rd party Browser extension.
It may or may not be your case.

Subject: When I launch an instance of IE6, it seems to launch the next
instance of the window, but then it closes it and launches the new one over
the existing one. Thus, I can't have multiple instances of I.E. running.
Very frustrating.

Solution: Yahoo Companion.
I uninstalled it and I'm now able to open new windows (Ctrl-N or
File/new/window)

If not installed then clean the malware and set the 3rd party extension
back, you may need it in some places you visit.
