ie 6.0 and disappearing cache

Hi,

recently my cache seems to be gone either ever time I
restart or every new day. I'm not sure which. The only
new progam I have intentionally installed is Ad-Aware. I
saw no such options on Ad-Aware.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated!

Do you mean "history"?

start > programs > accessories > system tools > scheduled
tasks. Do you have an entry for "disk cleanup"?

Open IE. Tools > internet options > "general" tab. To
what is your history set?

Which version of Windows do you run?

Try clean boot troubleshooting. We need your version of
Windows to point you to the proper instructions.

Uninstall ad-aware.

Internet Explorer, Tools, Options.
Increase the 'Days to keep pages in history' value.
Uncheck Empty temporary Internet Files when browser is closed box on the Advanced tab.

Wish it was that simple.

This is a sudden problem, appearing several weeks ago (I
think after an IE SP security update).

What happens is something is cleaning the files out of the
IE5.0 subdirectories (the 4 crytpically named ones)
in "real time" ... index.dat grows and I see links in the
file when I read it, but there are no actually cached
files underneath.

The files show if I open the file browser via ie->options-

settings->view files (the file browser is apparently

reading index.dat when it lists the directory contents),
but if I just open the cache directory using a normal file
browser, nothing shows in the file list.

If I try to copy a file from the cache I get an error -
file not found.

And of course, the real problem: browsing is amazingly
slow because each page is fully loaded everytime - as if
there is no cache - in fact even slower, because the file
is listed in index.dat, but not in the ie 5.0
subdirectory, so IE appears to go through some error
processing (it is slower on returning to apage than on
going the original time).

Still looking for a light in the darkness ...

BINGO!

Looks promising. Initial tests appear to validate this is
the issue.

Of course, a bit worrysome, disabling a piece of your
virus scan But IE should provide help with this. (I
have set all active X control activities to prompt.)
