Idiot's Question About Slaving a CD-RW

D

Deb

I have a new CD-RW drive screwed into my computer and
that's about as far as I've gotten.

I know where to connect the IDE cable that jumps off of
the the primary CD-R drive and I know how to attach the
power supply cable. (The sound card is on the
motherboard, so I don't have to deal with that.)

I don't know how to physically configure the Master/Slave
jumper setting on the back of the drive so that the CD-RW
knows that it is a slave.

I have two open pins under the Master label, two open pins
under the Slave label and two pins covered by a yellow
plastic sheath under a label called "Cable Select".

What do I do and how do I do it? (Slowly please, you're
talking to a hardware do-do.)

And as a total admission of my ignorance... does the
computer just automatically supply whatever driver-type
information it needs for the new drive? I didn't receive
a floppy with drivers in the box and the CD supplied is
for the burning software (unless, of course, they hid the
drivers on that cd).

Thanks.

Hi Deb -

Remove the jumper (what you called the "yellow plastic sheath") from the
pins labeled Cable Select and move it to the pins under the Slave label.
You may need to use a pair of tweezers or a small needle-nose pliers to be
able to grab hold of the jumper.

That's all there is to it.

Hello
Just leave the jumpers set on cable select for both the CD-Rom and CD-RW and
then plug them in and they will assigned drive letters according to how they
are plugged into the IDE cable.
They are plug and play so there is no software to install.

If she only has the 40 conductor ide cable then she will have to use the
jumpers. Set the cdrw to master and the cd to slave or vice versa, some say
it makes a difference but I believe the difference is psychological. Xp will
handle the drivers for you. Go to control panel then system then hardware
then device manager. scoll down and open the cdroms. right click one at a
time and select properties then properties tab put a check in the box for
digital audio. Now goto the ide controllers and then to the secondary.right
click and properties then advanced tab.Make sure the transfer mode for both
is 'dma if available'. Do not let them run as pio.

Hi

If you use a 40pin 80 conductor shield cable, you can set the jumper to cable select
For 40 Pin cable, you must set the jumper to master or slave for both drives
Set the faster drive to master
